Does a Duck's Quack Really Not Echo?
It's one of the most-repeated "random facts" of the internet-list era: a duck's quack doesn't echo, and — the version usually adds for extra mystery — nobody knows why. It's false, and it's been tested more than once. What's more interesting than the myth itself is who the internet now credits with busting it, and who it quietly leaves out.
The claim
A duck's quack does not produce an echo, and, as the claim is usually phrased, science has no explanation for why.
Source trail
The claim itself has no traceable origin: it circulated as an already-established "fact" on internet trivia lists by the 1990s, and no source we could find names who first said it or when. What does have a trail is who gets credit for disproving it. Cecil Adams's long-running newspaper column The Straight Dope — read directly on its own current page (checked 2026-08-25) — describes an associate borrowing an actual duck and testing the claim in the field. Five years later, in September 2003, Professor Trevor Cox of the University of Salford's Acoustics Research Centre ran a more instrumented version with a duck named Daisy, presented it at the British Association Festival of Science, and it became a wire story picked up worldwide. That 2003 study is the version every current source we could fetch now credits — some without knowing, or at least without saying, that the question had already been field-tested and answered once before.
What's confirmed
- Ducks' quacks do echo — independently confirmed at least twice, five years apart. The Straight Dope's own account (checked 2026-08-25) describes Cecil Adams's associate "Jane" borrowing a duck reached through a friend's connection to a children's farm near Flint, Michigan, and testing it in the courtyard of East Lansing High School — chosen for its echo-friendly hard surfaces. The duck wouldn't quack on command until someone carried it at a run; once it did, in the column's own words, "yes, the quacks echoed." Separately, the ABC Science Archive (checked 2026-08-25, Australia's national broadcaster) reports Trevor Cox's 2003 test: recording Daisy the duck's quack in an anechoic (echo-deadening) chamber and a reverberation chamber, then running computer simulations of the same quack in a concert hall and near a cliff face. Both tests reach the same result.
- A third, independent test the same year reached the same result. Wikipedia's own list of MythBusters episodes (checked 2026-08-25) confirms the show tested "does a duck's quack echo?" in the episode "Alcatraz Escape," which aired December 12, 2003 — three months after Cox's Salford study — and rated the myth Busted.
- Every currently-ranking small or mid-size source we could directly fetch credits only the 2003 Salford study — none mentions the 1998 Straight Dope test. IFLScience (checked 2026-08-25) writes that "scientists came up with some concrete acoustic data to prove that yes, duck quacks do echo," quoting Cox directly ("the sound produced is rather sinister… it does indeed echo") and naming no earlier test. Bird Spot (checked 2026-08-25) states that "by the turn of the century, it was so prevalent that in 2003, scientists from Salford University's Acoustics Research Centre... decided to bust it once and for all" — language that reads as if 2003 were the first attempt. PolitiFact's 2019 fact-check of a viral Facebook post (checked 2026-08-25) rates the claim False and cites only Cox's research and a 2003 Guardian article. One small site did credit the earlier test: TodayIFoundOut.com (checked 2026-08-25) states plainly, "the earliest place I could find where this myth was debunked was by Cecil Adams of the Straight Dope in 1998," before describing the Salford study as "a much more scientific manner" and noting MythBusters tested it "the same year."
- Even Wikipedia's own correction skips the attribution question entirely. The List of common misconceptions about science, technology, and mathematics (checked 2026-08-25) states only: "A duck's quack actually does echo, although the echo may be difficult to hear for humans under some circumstances" — one sentence, naming neither the Straight Dope, Salford, Cox, nor MythBusters.
- Two sources give two different, unreconciled physical explanations for why the echo is hard to hear. Cox's own explanation, reported by both ABC Science and PolitiFact, is that a duck's quack is quiet and fades out gradually, so the returning echo arrives at low volume and blends into the tail end of the original sound rather than standing apart from it. A different answer appears on PhysLink's own "Ask the Experts" page (checked 2026-08-25): contributor Frank DiBonaventuro explains it instead through standing waves at specific nodes and destructive interference from partially reflective surfaces — a general acoustic phenomenon, not something specific to how a duck's quack decays. Neither source addresses the other's explanation, and we found no source that tests the two against each other.
What isn't
- The Straight Dope's own page, as it exists today, does not display a clear publication date. The "1998" date used above traces to TodayIFoundOut.com's own claim, not to anything dated on straightdope.com's current page itself. We could not independently pin the test to a specific year from the primary column alone.
- The University of Salford's own original pages about the Daisy experiment could not be reached this session. Both a page titled "Duck Quack Echo" and an older schools-outreach page — indexed by search engines under Salford's own domain, the latter's title alone reading "A duck quack doesn't echo, and noone knows the reason why" — returned dead-link errors (DNS failure and HTTP 404) on every attempt. We cannot verify either page's actual content, including whether Salford's own outreach material once stated the un-debunked version of the myth as fact before the 2003 study corrected it; that detail is not asserted here, only the search-indexed title reported. The Guardian's and UPI's original September 8, 2003 news reports on the study also could not be fetched (both blocked on every attempt), so Cox's exact quotes above are sourced to ABC Science and PolitiFact's reporting, not to the original wire coverage directly.
- No source traces who first claimed ducks' quacks don't echo, or when. It appears to already have been circulating as an established claim by the 1990s; no source we found — including the ones that dedicate space to debunking it — names an originator or an earliest print appearance.
- Several sources central to how this myth is currently reported this session could not be read directly. Snopes' own fact-check of this claim, the MythBusters Fandom wiki's episode page, a fan recap site's detailed episode breakdown, the episode's IMDb page, and Trevor Cox's own current blog all returned access errors on every attempt. They're named here for context, not cited as sources for any fact above.
Verdict
False, and settled more than once: a duck's quack does echo, confirmed by at least three independent tests — a newspaper column's own field experiment, a university acoustics lab, and a TV myth-busting show — spanning 1998 to 2003. But the tidy story nearly every current source repeats, that a celebrated 2003 study "finally proved" it, erases an identical field test that reached the same answer five years earlier and gets credit in almost nothing we could find. The myth about how the myth got busted needs its own footnote.
