What Animal Is Fastest Over Distance, Not Sprint?
"The cheetah is the fastest animal on Earth" is one of the most repeated animal facts there is, and it comes with an asterisk almost everywhere it appears: a cheetah can only hold that speed for a few seconds. The animal usually named as the real winner over any real distance is the pronghorn antelope. We went looking for the actual measurement behind that second claim.
The claim
The pronghorn antelope, not the cheetah, is the fastest land animal over sustained distance, because a cheetah's top speed collapses after a few hundred metres while a pronghorn can hold a much higher speed for miles.

The physiological case for the pronghorn traces mainly to one 1991 study: a team led by Stan Lindstedt at Northern Arizona University put pronghorn on a treadmill and measured their oxygen consumption directly, to explain how they sustain such a demanding pace. That paper is the apparent root of nearly every "pronghorn beats cheetah over distance" claim in circulation — but the sustained-speed number attached to the claim is not the same from one page to the next, and Guinness World Records' own official record for the category doesn't match the study either.

The underlying physiology study is real, peer-reviewed, and gives one specific

6346, pages 748–750 (24 October 1991). The paper's own abstract, quoted directly via Northern
Arizona University's own faculty publication repository (experts.nau.edu, checked 2026-08-21, since
nature.comredirects to a login wall for the full article — see below), states pronghorn "can run 11 km in 10 min, an average speed of 65 km h⁻¹" and were measured consuming enough oxygen to support "a predicted running speed >20 m s⁻¹ (70 km h⁻¹)." The same abstract is explicit that the animal's commonly quoted 100 km/h figure is only "an alleged top speed" — the study's own words, not a number it measured. - Guinness World Records does recognize the pronghorn for exactly this record — with a third, uncited number. Guinness's own page, "Fastest mammal on land – over long distances" (guinnessworldrecords.com, checked 2026-08-21), names the pronghorn and states "56 kilometre(s) per hour for as far as 6.6 kilometres (4.1 miles)" — a lower speed over a shorter distance than the Lindstedt paper's own 65 km/h over 11 km. Guinness's page cites no source for this specific figure; it does cite a 1974 Wildlife Monographs paper by D. W. Kitchen and a 1997 book by John A. Byers, but only for separate, higher, short-distance sprint speeds (64–88.5 km/h), not for its own long-distance headline number.

The "cheetah can only hold it briefly" half of the comparison checks out — and the
commonly quoted cheetah top speed has the same sourcing problem the pronghorn figure does.
A 2013 study by Alan Wilson's team at the Royal Veterinary College fitted GPS/inertial tracking
collars on five wild cheetahs in Botswana across 367 hunting runs. Confirmed via ScienceDaily's republication of the Royal Veterinary College's own release (checked
2026-08-21): the fastest speed recorded was "58 miles per hour (or 93 kilometers per hour)" —
lower than "the anecdotal 70 mph (112.7 kph) often claimed for cheetahs in the wild," and the
article states this was the first time cheetah hunting speed had actually been measured with
precision instruments in the wild at all, rather than estimated from captive animals chasing a
lure.

What isn't
- No two of the popular retellings we checked state the same pronghorn sustained-speed figure, and none cite Lindstedt's paper or Guinness's own record page. Discover Magazine's own article (discovermagazine.com, checked 2026-08-21), built around an interview with Lindstedt himself, states pronghorn herds "can average 40 miles an hour for half an hour or more" — a different speed over a much longer duration than his own paper's 65 km/h/11 km figure, with no citation given. A-Z Animals (a-z-animals.com, checked 2026-08-21) states pronghorn "can maintain a speed of around 30 mph for up to 20 miles," citing "studies have shown" with no study named. Africa Safaris' travel blog (africa-safaris.com, checked 2026-08-21) states pronghorn reach "up to 62 mph (100 km/h)" with no duration and no citation — reusing, as far as we could trace it, the exact 100 km/h figure Lindstedt's own paper calls only "alleged," not something the study measured as a sustained speed.

We could not read either underlying paper's full text ourselves. Both

Both papers are sourced here to a university's own repository page and a research institution's own press release, respectively — not independently re-derived from the full papers. - Whether the pronghorn beats every other distance-running candidate, not just the cheetah, was not checked this session. Every source found frames this as specifically a pronghorn-vs-cheetah comparison; sustained-distance contenders like migratory birds, sled dogs, or Mongolian gazelles were not researched here, and this brief does not claim the pronghorn is the fastest distance-runner among all animals, only that it outlasts the cheetah, which is the comparison virtually every source we found actually makes.
- A separate, broader claim — that humans can eventually out-distance even the pronghorn over very long timescales via persistence hunting and superior heat dissipation — is repeated on at least one small blog we found, but that page cited no research at all (roadsntrails.substack.com, checked 2026-08-21, states humans are "the undisputed champions of endurance running" without naming a single study). We are not asserting or rejecting that claim here — it wasn't independently checked this session, and it answers a different question (multi-hour persistence hunting) than the minutes-to-tens-of-minutes comparison this brief is about.
Verdict
The core reversal holds up: a cheetah's speed is real but brief, and the pronghorn's ability to sustain a much higher pace for miles is grounded in an actual peer-reviewed measurement of its oxygen consumption, not folklore. But almost nobody repeating this fact uses the same number for it — Discover Magazine, a-z-animals.com, africa-safaris.com and Guinness World Records' own official record for this exact category each state a different sustained speed, a different distance, or both, and none of them cite the 1991 study that appears to be the actual root of the claim. The "cheetah" side of the story has an equivalent problem: the 70 mph figure commonly used to set up the contrast is higher than the only speed anyone has actually measured a cheetah reach while hunting in the wild.
