How Much Does the Internet Weigh?
"The whole internet weighs about as much as a strawberry" is one of those trivia lines that sounds too specific to be made up — like someone must have actually put it on a scale. Nobody did. It's a calculation, and when we went looking for where it came from, we found it isn't even the only calculation. The others don't agree with it, or with each other, by orders of magnitude.
The claim
The internet — meaning the electrons in motion that carry and store its data — has a knowable physical weight, and that weight is about 50 grams, roughly the mass of one strawberry.

The 50-gram figure traces to Russell Seitz, a Harvard-trained physicist, who worked it out in
2006 by estimating the mass of the electrons flowing through the power feeding the world's
servers at the time. His own original post lived on a Typepad blog; that URL
(adamant.typepad.com) has since gone dark and now redirects to a domain-parking
page, so it could not be checked directly this session.
What we could check directly: Discover Magazine's own 2007 article on the same question, byline Stephen Cass, dated 29 May 2007. It takes a completely different approach — not server power, but the electrons needed to physically store a bit as a charge in a computer's memory — and reaches its own, wildly different number. Then, per tech press coverage we could reach, the question got a third answer in 2025: Wired revisited it and quoted Christopher White, president of NEC Laboratories America, dismissing the original 50-gram figure outright.
What's confirmed
- Discover Magazine's own 2007 calculation, read directly, disagrees with the 50-gram figure by about seven orders of magnitude — inside the very outlet that helped popularise it. The article (checked 2026-08-17) states its method plainly: each stored bit takes roughly 40,000 electrons to charge a capacitor to represent a 1, an electron weighs about 2×10⁻³⁰ pound, and total daily internet traffic was then about "40 petabytes" (citing Clifford Holliday's Internet Growth 2006). Its own stated result: "the weight of the Internet adds up to just about 0.2 millionths of an ounce" — on the order of five millionths of a gram, not 50 grams. The magazine names Seitz's number in passing and quietly returns one nine million times smaller using a different definition of what's being weighed.
- A specific, third calculation exists and reportedly rejects the original as wrong, but we could only reach it at one remove. Tech-news coverage — TechSpot and a Slashdot discussion thread (both checked 2026-08-17) report that Wired published a March 2025 piece in which Christopher White, president of NEC Laboratories America, called Seitz's 50-gram estimate "just wrong" and proposed a thermodynamic method instead — estimating the minimum energy needed to encode the internet's projected data volume and converting that energy to mass via E = mc² — arriving at roughly 53 quadrillionths of a gram. We attempted to fetch the Wired article directly this session and could not (the domain did not load through our fetch tool); this figure and quote are reported here as TechSpot's and Slashdot's own reporting, not independently verified against Wired's original text.
- Nobody in this chain is claiming to have weighed the same thing. Seitz's method (as described by every source that discusses it, including Discover's own article) estimated power-grid electrons; Discover's own 2007 method counted electrons in transit and storage; White's reported method estimates the thermodynamic minimum energy of encoding data and converts it via relativity. Three different questions, three different units of analysis, three different answers — this isn't three physicists disagreeing about a fact, it's three different definitions of "the internet's weight" being reported under one headline.
What isn't confirmed
- Seitz's own original 50-gram calculation could not be verified against his own page this session. Every current source repeating "50 grams" — including the small independent blogs that dominate this topic's search results — is repeating a number whose original home is now a dead, redirecting link. We report the figure as Discover Magazine's own article states it was attributed to Seitz, not as something we confirmed on Seitz's own page.
- The 2025 NEC/Wired figure rests on reporting about reporting. TechSpot and Slashdot both describe a Wired article we could not load directly; neither gives a direct, working link to it. Until that article can be fetched and checked on its own terms, the "just wrong" quote and the 53-quadrillionths-of-a-gram figure should be read as "reported elsewhere," not as independently confirmed by us.
- Most pages that repeat the strawberry line don't source it at all. Several of the small independent sites that currently rank for this question state the 50-gram figure with no attribution whatsoever — phrases like "a theoretical estimate" or "many physicists conclude" stand in for a name, a date, or a link. One page we checked does name Seitz and links to Discover's article, but folds his 2006 method together with a traffic figure in a way that blurs which number came from which calculation. None of the pages we checked show Discover's own 2007 rebuttal-by-implication next to the figure it's supposedly supporting.
Verdict
"The internet weighs about as much as a strawberry" is a real, attributable estimate — not a fabrication — but it is one estimate among at least three built on incompatible definitions of what's being weighed, and the version that gets repeated is the one whose own original source page no longer exists. The most striking thing we found wasn't a myth being wrong; it was Discover Magazine's own follow-up, sitting one search away, quietly returning an answer nine million times smaller than the number people still quote from the same outlet's era of coverage — and almost nobody puts the two side by side.
