What Is the Most Expensive Object Ever Built?
"The most expensive object ever built" is a satisfying kind of trivia claim — it sounds like someone added up a receipt. The usual answer is the International Space Station, and the usual number attached to it is $150 billion. We went looking for the receipt. What we found instead was a citation chain that runs cold, and NASA's own internal auditors giving a smaller number than the one everyone quotes.

Guinness World Records (checked 2026-08-17) names the ISS as the record holder and states its "final cost will be over $100 billion" — but cites no source for that figure at all, not even a footnote.
The more specific "$150 billion" figure traces to Wikipedia's own International Space Station programme article (checked 2026-08-17), which states "as of 2010, the total cost was US$150 billion" and attaches a footnote pointing to a 2010 blog post on a site called Zidbits. We tried to load that post directly, twice, at two different URLs; both attempts returned empty, unreadable content. Wikipedia's own citation trail for the number nearly every other page repeats leads to a page that no longer works.
The two closest existing "answer" pages for this question repeat the same number without tracing it. SlashGear (checked 2026-08-17) states both ESA's roughly €100-billion figure and an unattributed "$150 billion" figure back to back, without reconciling them or naming who produced the second one. Rarest.org (checked 2026-08-17) gives "about $150 billion" too, sourced to a car-and-lifestyle blog, motorbiscuit.com — one more link in a chain that, so far as we could trace it, never reaches an agency, an auditor, or a line-item budget.
What's confirmed
- The ISS is, without dispute, extraordinarily expensive — but NASA's own Inspector General keeps landing well below $150 billion for the U.S. share alone. Two NASA Office of Inspector General audit reports were quoted directly by outlets that had fetched and linked them: SpacePolicyOnline (checked 2026-08-17) quotes NASA OIG report IG-14-031 (2014) stating "the United States spent approximately $75 billion on the ISS through 2013: $43.7 billion for construction and program costs plus $30.7 billion for 37 shuttle launches." A separate audit, quoted directly by NASA Watch (checked 2026-08-17), gives a July 2015 figure: "The United States has invested almost $78 billion in the International Space Station... over the last 21 years." Both figures cover the U.S. share only — not Russia's, Europe's, Japan's, or Canada's spending — and both come from NASA's own internal watchdog, not from a blog or an aggregator. We could not load either OIG PDF directly ourselves this session (one returned HTTP 404, the other returned unreadable binary content), so these figures are reported here as directly quoted by the two outlets above, not as independently re-derived from the original PDFs.
- ESA's own page states a total program figure, across every partner nation. ESA's "How much does it cost?" page (checked 2026-08-17, fetched twice to confirm the exact wording) states plainly: "the cost of the International Space Station, including development, assembly and running costs... comes to €100 billion," shared between the United States, Russia, Canada, Japan, and ten ESA member states. ESA's own quoted share of that total is about €8 billion.
- NASA Watch's own author directly names the $150-billion figure's sourcing problem, independently of what we found. The same article quoted above states that the figure "traces back to Wikipedia, which cites a 2010 Zidbits blog post and a SpaceReview article" relying on "old NASA budget charts and cost estimates from other news stories" — a description that matches, without our prompting it, exactly the dead-end citation chain we traced ourselves above.
What isn't confirmed
- What the original $150-billion (or, by some accounts, $160-billion) estimate was actually based on. Wikipedia's own footnote is the only trail back to it, and that trail ends at a page that would not load for us on any attempt. We cannot say whether the original 2010 estimate used a defensible method or not — only that it can no longer be checked, and that the number built on top of it has been repeated for over fifteen years regardless.
- Guinness's own "over $100 billion" claim has no visible source at all — not a footnote, not a named estimate, nothing. It happens to be consistent with NASA's own Inspector General figures, but Guinness does not say that, or say anything about where its number comes from.
- ESA's own page contradicts itself on the timeframe for its own headline figure. The same page states its €100-billion total covers "development, assembly and running costs over 10 years," then two sentences later states that the same €100-billion figure is "shared over a period of almost 30 years" between all participants. We checked the exact wording twice to be sure this wasn't a paraphrase; both fetches returned the same two sentences. We could not resolve which span the figure is actually meant to cover, and ESA's page does not clarify.
- "Most expensive object ever built" is doing more definitional work than any source we checked admits. The U.S. Federal Highway Administration's own page (checked 2026-08-17) states its final, legislatively mandated 1991 cost estimate for completing the Interstate Highway System: "$128.9 billion (Federal share: $114.3 billion)" — in 1991 dollars, with no inflation adjustment stated on the page. That is already close to, or above, NASA's own audited U.S.-only ISS figures, decades before adjusting for inflation to today's dollars. Nobody compares the ISS to a continental highway system built over decades — a network of roads plainly isn't "one object" the way a space station is — but no source we checked actually says so. The boundary of what counts as a single "object" is carrying the claim, unstated.
Verdict
That the ISS is one of the most expensive things humans have ever built is not in doubt — every source we checked, from Guinness to NASA's own auditors, agrees on that much. But the specific, most-repeated number, $150 billion, does not trace to any audited total we could find: it traces, through Wikipedia's own footnote, to a blog post that no longer loads, while NASA's own Inspector General reports for the U.S. share alone sit tens of billions of dollars below it. "Most expensive object ever built" is also a claim that depends on where you draw the line around "object" — and every page we read draws that line silently, in the ISS's favor, without saying so.
