Did Ergot Poisoning Cause the Salem Witch Trials?
It's the tidy "twist" ending of dozens of Salem witch trials explainers: the accusers weren't lying and weren't just swept up in panic — they were poisoned. A fungus growing on damp rye, the story goes, produced the convulsions and visions everyone else blamed on witchcraft. It's a satisfying, scientific-sounding fix for a story that otherwise has no clean explanation. We went looking for how settled that fix actually is.
The claim
Convulsive ergotism — poisoning from ergot (Claviceps purpurea), a fungus that infects rye and other grains in cold, damp growing seasons — caused, or substantially contributed to, the physical symptoms behind the 1692 Salem witchcraft accusations.

The claim traces to one identifiable origin: Linnda R. Caporael, then a graduate student, published "Ergotism: The Satan Loosed in Salem?" in Science, vol. 192, on April 2, 1976 — citation confirmed directly against Crossref's own record for the paper, checked 2026-08-25. Eight months later, on December 24, 1976, the same journal published "Ergotism and the Salem Village Witch Trials" by Nicholas P. Spanos and Jack Gottlieb — Science, vol. 194, pp. 1390–1394, also confirmed via Crossref — arguing the evidence didn't support Caporael's hypothesis. A third round followed in the 1980s: historian Mary Kilbourne Matossian defended a version of the theory in "Ergot and the Salem Witchcraft Affair," American Scientist 70(4), 1982, and again in her 1989 book Poisons of the Past. From there the trail splits. Most retellings aimed at general readers — a Purdue University Agriculture News piece (October 2024), Discover Magazine (October 2021), and shorter items on Britannica and CliffsNotes — describe Caporael's hypothesis on its own, as a real, sourced possibility. Only a minority we found — Wikipedia's own biography of Caporael, and a Salem Witch Museum blog post dated May 17, 2023 — mention that the hypothesis was challenged at all.
What's confirmed
- Caporael's 1976 article is real, and its own case for ergot is explicitly circumstantial, not proven. Fetched directly via a Southern Methodist University physics course page hosting the article's text (physics.smu.edu, checked 2026-08-25) — a course-hosted mirror, not Science's own domain, but its header matches Crossref's record for the paper exactly: "Convulsive ergotism may have been a physiological basis for the Salem witchcraft crisis in 1692," Linnda R. Caporael, Science vol. 192 (2 April 1976). The article argues 1691's cold winter and hot, stormy summer (per diarist Samuel Sewall) suited ergot growth, and that low, wet meadowland owned by the Putnam family — a name tied to several accusers — was the kind of ground ergot favors. It also states its own limit directly: "there can never be hard proof for the presence of ergot in Salem, but a circumstantial case is demonstrable."
- A rebuttal exists in the same journal, eight months later, and its stated conclusion rejects the hypothesis outright. "Ergotism and the Salem Village Witch Trials," Spanos & Gottlieb, Science 194(4272):1390–1394 (December 24, 1976) — citation confirmed independently across five bibliographic records (Crossref, PubMed, WorldCat, ADS and Wikipedia, all checked 2026-08-25). We could not render the paper's own PDF as text this session (see "What isn't"), so the specific line we can attribute to it — "the available evidence does not support the hypothesis that ergot poisoning played a role in the Salem crisis" — comes from a search-engine text snippet of that document, not our own read of the full page; flagged here as a different, weaker sourcing method than a direct fetch.
- A contemporary historian objected too, on record, the same year. Wikipedia's biography of Caporael (en.wikipedia.org, checked 2026-08-25) quotes historian Stephen Nissenbaum calling the theory unlikely because it "appears unlikely to me that this would not happen in any other year, in any other household and in any other village," and separately records that Matossian's later defense drew a pointed response from Spanos, who called part of her argument "irrelevant to the ergot hypothesis, incorrect, and presented in a highly misleading manner." We read this from Wikipedia's account, not from Spanos's or Nissenbaum's own published pages, which we did not independently reach.
- Two current, general-audience retellings state the hypothesis with no hint any of the above happened. Purdue's own Agriculture News (ag.purdue.edu, published October 2024, checked 2026-08-25) quotes its own fungal herbarium curator, Rabern Simmons, describing the theory sympathetically and does not name Spanos, Gottlieb, or any rebuttal anywhere on the page. Discover Magazine (discovermagazine.com, published October 12, 2021, checked 2026-08-25) frames the cause as an open mystery and lists several competing theories, but also never names the 1976 rebuttal specifically.
- The one page we found that argues back with specifics is the Salem Witch Museum's own. Its post "Debunking the 'Moldy Bread' Theory" (salemwitchmuseum.com, dated May 17, 2023, checked 2026-08-25) states that only 2 of the 8 people in Rev. Samuel Parris's own household were afflicted despite sharing the same food supply, that the affliction spread more than 20 miles to Andover — inconsistent with one contaminated local grain source — and that some accusers are on record later admitting they acted "for sport."
What isn't
- Whether ergot was ever actually present in Salem's 1691–92 rye. No physical or documentary evidence of contaminated grain has been found by anyone in this trail, including Caporael, whose own paper calls the case "circumstantial." Everything on this side of the argument is inference from weather and geography, not a sample of the grain itself.

What we report of its content rests on a Wikipedia paraphrase and one search-engine-surfaced quotation, not our own reading of the full paper. - Where the Salem Witch Museum's specific figures come from. The household count, the Andover spread, and the "for sport" testimony are stated on the museum's own page without a citation to a specific 1692 court record or to the Spanos/Gottlieb paper itself. We could not independently trace any of the three back to a primary document this session.
- Matossian's specific 1982 counter-argument. We found only secondhand mentions of her claim that the accusers' symptoms and age distribution fit convulsive ergotism better than critics allowed — not her American Scientist article itself, so we cannot state her argument in her own words.
Verdict
The ergot hypothesis is real science, not an internet invention — Caporael published it in a serious peer-reviewed journal in 1976. But "real science" and "settled science" are different claims, and this is a case where they've been treated as the same one. The same journal ran a rebuttal within the year, a historian objected immediately, and the argument continued into the 1980s without resolving either way. Two of the general-audience retellings we checked directly, including a university's own 2024 article, describe the hypothesis with no sign any of that happened. Whether ergot was actually in Salem's rye that year has never been established one way or the other — nobody has found the fungus itself, only argued over whether the weather and the symptoms fit it.
