Is the Boiling Frog Story Actually True?
"Put a frog in boiling water and it jumps out. Put it in cool water and heat it slowly, and it won't notice until it's too late." It's one of the most reused metaphors in management books, op-eds and climate writing — and also one of the most reliably "debunked" facts online, with dozens of articles assuring you biologists have proven frogs always escape. We went looking for the actual 19th-century experiments everyone cites and found the debunking is less clean than the debunking pages make it sound.
The claim
A frog placed in already-boiling water will jump out immediately, but a frog placed in cool water that is then heated gradually enough will not perceive the danger and will stay until it dies — and this was demonstrated experimentally in the 1870s.
Source trail
The chain nearly every source repeats starts with German physiologist Friedrich Goltz in the late 1860s, who was studying whether frogs have a "soul" seated in the brain. Two later German experimenters, Heinzmann (1872) and Carl Fratscher (1875), are credited with the more direct version of the claim. American physiologist William Thompson Sedgwick published a paper in 1888 trying to reconcile the conflicting results. The story then crossed into popular psychology through Edward Wheeler Scripture's 1897 book The New Psychology, and from there into a century of management books, sermons and, eventually, Al Gore's 2006 climate documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Modern biologists, led by University of Oklahoma herpetologist Victor Hutchison, spent the late 20th century pushing back on the metaphor as a factual claim.
What's confirmed
- The experiment everyone traces this to did not actually test what the popular version of the story claims. Goltz's frogs that stayed motionless in slowly heated water had their brains surgically removed first — "pithed" frogs, with no capacity to consciously register danger. When Goltz tested intact frogs with working brains, they became agitated and tried to escape once the water reached about 25°C, well below boiling. Both Wikipedia's own citation summary and an independent account at TodayIFoundOut (fetched directly, checked 2026-08-23) agree on this specific detail: the "success" case for the legend, at its origin, required destroying the animal's nervous system first. This particular nuance — that the founding experiment used decerebrated frogs — is not mentioned in any of the quick-debunk articles we checked; they treat the 19th-century experiments as simply "flawed" or "old," without saying that the flaw, in Goltz's case, was that the "passive" frogs couldn't feel anything at all.
- Later 19th-century experimenters, working with intact (non-pithed) frogs and extremely slow heating rates, reported the opposite of Goltz's intact-frog result. Per Wikipedia's citation trail (fetched directly, checked 2026-08-23, sourced to Fratscher's 1875 paper in Jenaische Zeitschrift für Naturwissenschaft), Carl Fratscher heated water from 20°C to 38°C over 2 hours 16 minutes — roughly 0.002°C per second — and reported that frogs in two separate trials remained in the water without moving until they died. TodayIFoundOut's account (fetched directly) describes Heinzmann's 1872 setup similarly: frogs on a platform that allowed partial escape stayed calm until roughly 37.5°C before becoming paralyzed. We could not reach either 19th-century paper directly (see "What isn't," below), so we cannot check their methodology ourselves — but two independent secondary accounts agree on what they reported.
- Modern biologists reject the practical claim for healthy frogs with a way out, and give a specific mechanistic reason. Victor Hutchison is quoted, in near-identical wording, by two independently fetched sources — IFLScience (published 8 January 2024, checked 2026-08-23) and TodayIFoundOut (checked 2026-08-23) — saying "the legend is entirely incorrect" and that a heated frog "will eventually become more and more active in attempts to escape," jumping out if the container allows it. Harvard biologist Douglas Melton and National Museum of Natural History herpetologist George Zug are cited making the same point via Wikipedia's own sourcing (checked 2026-08-23): an intact frog's nervous system keeps registering rising heat and driving escape behavior right up until the point where extreme heat seizes its muscles.
- The metaphor is old enough, and repeated seriously enough, that even a peer-reviewed medical journal has used it uncritically. The Canadian Medical Association Journal ran a 2004 editorial, fetched directly from PubMed Central (checked 2026-08-23), that repeats the story as "urban myth" to make a point about slow-creeping health risks — without citing a single one of the actual 19th-century experiments or checking whether the underlying claim is true. It illustrates how far the metaphor has traveled from the contested science it's supposedly based on.
What isn't
- We could not independently verify either of the two 19th-century experiments that reported "frog stays put." Heinzmann's 1872 paper (Pflügers Archiv für die gesamte Physiologie) and Fratscher's 1875 paper (Jenaische Zeitschrift für Naturwissenschaft) are both old, German-language journal articles; we found no directly fetchable copy of either. Their reported findings are described here only as Wikipedia's citation summary and TodayIFoundOut characterize them, not from our own reading of the original data or methodology.
- The most detailed English-language write-up on the science, a 2007 essay by herpetologist Whit Gibbons for the University of Georgia's Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, would not load for us. Two attempts against two different addresses for the same institution failed — one connection was refused outright, the other reported an expired TLS certificate. It is cited by name (and quoted secondhand, identically, by both IFLScience and TodayIFoundOut) as the piece that got Hutchison's "entirely incorrect" quote on the record, but we could not read Gibbons's own text to confirm the quote's exact context.
- No source we found describes a modern, controlled re-run of Fratscher's or Heinzmann's original slow-heating protocol. TodayIFoundOut says plainly that "modern scientists acknowledge the scarcity of credible experiments and haven't replicated the original studies, citing ethical concerns." The modern rejection of the myth rests on general principles of frog thermoregulation and escape behavior, not a like-for-like retest of the specific 19th-century claim under the same conditions.
- The closest thing to a modern, relevant experiment we found is paywalled. A 2020 paper in the Journal of Thermal Biology by Guevara-Molina, Gomes and Camacho, on dehydration's effect on bullfrog thermal-escape behavior, is referenced in Wikipedia's citation list; a direct fetch of its ScienceDirect page returned an access-denied response. Whether its finding (that hydrated bullfrogs reliably escape heated water while dehydrated ones sometimes do not) has any bearing on the original 19th-century protocol is something we can't check without reading the paper itself.
Verdict
Not a clean myth, and not confirmed fact either. The specific experiment most retellings point to as the story's scientific foundation — Goltz's — only produced the "frog does nothing" result on frogs with their brains removed; his intact frogs escaped at 25°C, the opposite of the legend. Two later German experimenters reported the classic result on intact frogs under extremely slow heating, but we could not check their work ourselves, and nobody we found has run a modern, like-for-like replication of it. What's solid is the practical, present-day claim: a healthy frog with room to move will actively try to escape water that's getting dangerously warm, and modern biologists are unanimous on that point. What's shakier is the tidy story, repeated by nearly every debunking page we checked, that 19th-century science was simply wrong from the start — the record is closer to "one badly designed experiment on brainless frogs, and two other experiments nobody alive has been able to check."
