Fire safes and gun safes all advertise a number of minutes. What that number was actually tested against is where brands stop agreeing. We fetched five brands' own current product pages directly and found two different kinds of claim sitting side by side on the same shelf, unlabeled as such.

Why "minutes" alone isn't a fair comparison
Two directly-fetched sources describe the gap between the two kinds of claim. usa-gun-shop.com states: "UL-listed fire ratings are tested by Underwriters Laboratories, an independent third-party testing organization... UL subjects it to standardized, repeatable fire conditions using calibrated equipment. UL engineers verify the results. UL certifies the rating," against "Self-tested fire ratings mean the manufacturer conducted their own test, in their own facility, with their own equipment, following their own protocol. There's no independent verification." secureitgunstorage.com is blunter about self-administered tests: "Manufacturers devised their own test, deliberately crafted to ensure passing results." Neither claim is fake — every number on this page is quoted directly from the brand's own current page — but they are not the same kind of promise, and a shelf label showing only "90 minutes" doesn't say which one you're looking at.
What this does not do
- It compares specific named models per brand, not every safe each one sells.
- It cannot tell you whether YOUR insurer requires a UL-Classified rating specifically — that's a policy question for your insurer, not something any safe's own page states.
- None of the brands' own pages fetched for this tool state a rating above 1200°F using anything but a flat test temperature per model line — this page cannot show a self-tested brand "scaling up" temperature with duration because no source found does that; only the UL-Classified rows do.
- It is not a fire-safety recommendation. These are each brand's own marketing or product-spec copy, not an independent test this project ran itself, and none of the figures here account for a safe's age, door seal wear, or a fire that burns longer than the rated duration.
