Gun Safe & Fire Safe Fire Rating Comparator

Fire safes and gun safes all advertise a number of minutes. What that number was actually tested against is where brands stop agreeing. We fetched five brands' own current product pages directly and found two different kinds of claim sitting side by side on the same shelf, unlabeled as such.

Self-tested brands hold the temperature flat no matter how long they claim. Browning's own page states 155 minutes at 1,200°F for one safe and 140 minutes at 1,200°F for another — same temperature, different claimed time. Liberty's own page confirms its furnace test "ramp[s] up the heat to 1200 degrees within ten minutes" and holds it there for the whole test, regardless of the model. A longer self-tested claim means a longer test, not a hotter one.
UL Classified tests get hotter as the claimed duration gets longer — the opposite pattern. SentrySafe's own pages state its 30-minute-rated Fire Chest was tested at 1,550°F and its 1-hour-rated S6770 was tested at 1,700°F — a harsher test for the longer claim, because Underwriters Laboratories, an independent third-party lab, models a real fire getting hotter the longer it burns. One directly-fetched explainer put the practical result plainly: "A 45-minute rating at 1,400 degrees is not the same as a 45-minute rating at 1,200 degrees. The higher temperature represents a more severe fire scenario." By that logic, Browning's self-tested 155-minute claim was never even tested at the temperature SentrySafe's UL-Classified 30-minute safe had to survive.

Why "minutes" alone isn't a fair comparison

Two directly-fetched sources describe the gap between the two kinds of claim. usa-gun-shop.com states: "UL-listed fire ratings are tested by Underwriters Laboratories, an independent third-party testing organization... UL subjects it to standardized, repeatable fire conditions using calibrated equipment. UL engineers verify the results. UL certifies the rating," against "Self-tested fire ratings mean the manufacturer conducted their own test, in their own facility, with their own equipment, following their own protocol. There's no independent verification." secureitgunstorage.com is blunter about self-administered tests: "Manufacturers devised their own test, deliberately crafted to ensure passing results." Neither claim is fake — every number on this page is quoted directly from the brand's own current page — but they are not the same kind of promise, and a shelf label showing only "90 minutes" doesn't say which one you're looking at.
