Bike Lock Security Rating Comparator
Shop for a bike lock and you'll see three different kinds of rating on three different locks: an ABUS number up to 15, a Kryptonite number up to 10, and a Sold Secure tier from Bronze to Diamond. They all claim to answer the same question — how much theft protection does this lock give you — but they are not the same scale, and no source found publishes an official way to convert between them. The closest existing tool, thebestbikelock.com's own risk quiz, fetched directly, recommends only a Sold Secure tier and says plainly that brand-specific numeric scales "are no good when you want to compare different brands." Below, Kryptonite's own guidance and Sold Secure's own guidance are shown side by side for the same situation you pick — not blended into one number.
ABUS: real numbers, no guidance found to match them to a situation
ABUS's own product and collection pages, fetched directly, confirm the 1-15 scale is real — these are actual named locks and their actual stated levels, not a third-party estimate:

What's missing is guidance: no page on ABUS's own domain (abus.com's main site returned HTTP 403 on every URL tried this session; its abususa.com storefront loaded but doesn't explain the scale) states which level a reader in a given situation should look for. So ABUS isn't part of the interactive comparison above — showing a recommended ABUS number without a source for it would be inventing the one thing this page exists to avoid.
Why these numbers don't convert into each other
A Kryptonite "7" and a Sold Secure "Gold" are not stated by either company to mean the same thing. Kryptonite's own scale is self-assigned by Kryptonite for Kryptonite's own products, tied to a scenario (where and how long). Sold Secure is an independent tester — not a lock manufacturer — that puts locks from any brand through the same physical attack tests and assigns one of four tiers based on how long the lock resists. ABUS's own numbers are also self-assigned, by ABUS, for ABUS's own products. Nothing here says a Kryptonite lock rated "9" would pass Sold Secure's Gold test, or that an ABUS "level 12" lock is stronger or weaker than a Kryptonite "level 9" lock. They are three separate answers to a similar question, not one scale measured three ways — which is exactly why this page shows them side by side instead of merging them into one number.
What this does not do
- It doesn't tell you which specific lock to buy — it tells you what rating or tier to look for, in each system's own vocabulary, so you can check a product listing against it.
- It covers general bicycle locks. Sold Secure rates powered-cycle (e-bike, moped, motorcycle) locks on a separate, more demanding scale, which is not what's shown here.
- The exact attack-resistance minutes some sites quote for Sold Secure's tiers (1/3/5 minutes, plus 1.5 minutes with an angle grinder for Diamond) are not shown here — soldsecure.com's own ratings page, fetched directly this session, doesn't state them, only the tool-list and threat-environment wording quoted above.
- ABUS's own explanation of what its numbers mean could not be loaded from ABUS's own domain this session — see the note above rather than assuming the omission means no such explanation exists.
