Office Chair Weight Capacity Comparator

Last updated 2026-08-24

"Big and tall" office chairs get their own buying guides. Ordinary chairs mostly don't — as if every regular chair holds roughly the same amount. We fetched four brands' own current pages directly and found that isn't true even among chairs nobody calls "big and tall."

Two "ordinary" chairs, 45% apart, and neither says "big and tall." Steelcase's own Gesture page states "durable enough to handle weight up to 400 lbs" for its standard configuration — no special edition, no separate line. IKEA's own Markus page states "Tested for: 276 lb," also its only configuration. Neither brand flags its chair as heavy-duty or standard-duty; the 124 lb gap is just what each one's own page happens to state.
Herman Miller doesn't publish one Aeron number — it publishes three, tied to size. Herman Miller's own buying guide doesn't give the Aeron a single weight figure at all. It states "up to 300 pounds" for Size A, "up to 350 pounds" for Size B, and "up to 400 pounds" for Size C — a 100 lb spread inside one chair family, chosen by height recommendation rather than a "big and tall" label.

Every stated capacity, unfiltered

This table doesn't depend on what you typed above — every figure this page cites, straight from each brand's own current page.

BrandModelTheir own stated capacityTheir own note
Herman Miller Aeron, Size A 300 lb recommended up to 4'10"-5'4" tall
Herman Miller Aeron, Size B 350 lb recommended up to 5'2"-6' tall
Herman Miller Aeron, Size C 400 lb recommended up to 5'10"-6'6" tall
Steelcase Gesture 400 lb their own standard configuration, not a "big and tall" edition
Autonomous ErgoChair Pro 300 lb stated in their own "Capacity & Warranty" spec section
IKEA Markus 276 lb their own "Tested for" figure; only one configuration sold under this name

What this does not do

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The trailer hitch class weight rating comparator found the same "a size or class label doesn't reliably tell you the number" shape in a different market — a "Class 3" hitch from one brand outrating another brand's "Class 4." The standing desk weight capacity comparator found the same gap one desk over — IKEA's own "ordinary" desk at 154 lb next to UPLIFT's own "ordinary" desk at more than double that. The treadmill weight capacity comparator found the same gap yet again — Bowflex's own T9 and Sole's own F65, each brand's higher of two named home models, happen to land on the identical 350 lb. The stroller weight capacity comparator found three brands converging on one number the same way — UPPAbaby, Bugaboo and Chicco all state 50 lb — right next to a 53% gap between two jogging strollers built for the same job.
